It has taken Jade Garden some time to get back into the scene. When the Makati branch of this Hong Kong based restaurant (opened by the Maxim's group in 1971) closed around 8 years ago, a lot of people were wondering if the brand would make a comeback. With the success of the Peking Garden sister restaurants (which has the northern Chinese style of cooking), the restaurant is back at the Glorietta Mall, and we have the Ng family (of Cash & Carry fame) to thank for continuing the local franchise and taking the brand back into town. We recognized the captain waiter and he assured us that the food quality was impeccable as before.
I agree with him. The dimsum items were very fresh, very tasty. We had hakaw, siao long pao and pork siomai, and these were quite good. I just wished that the siao long pao had more soup inside though, it was a bit on the dry side for me.
It was a simple lunch with Vicky, Monique and Andie. We had beef & zucchini, spinach with century eggs, sweet sour pork, together with dried fish fried rice and noodles, sort of like a home-cooked menu that we chose. We finished it with almond paste and taho, which the girls liked a lot. The pork dish was especially crunchy on the outside, and had just the right sweet-sour combination, that I didn't complain; of course this is Vicky's favorite, so some applause is is order.
The ambiance still feels like the grand Chinese restaurants of the seventies. Somehow, I equate this with the brand--lots of jade items, with a smattering of bright reds and golds! The best part is that depending on what you order, you can enjoy first class Cantonese cuisine with a budget of anywhere around P600 per head to around P3,000 per head (this is, of course, for a kingly meal). I can still say that Jade Garden will be on the top 10 list of the best Chinese restaurants in Manila for a long while to come.
