The hullabaloo surrounding the nail-biter basketball games between San Mig Coffee and Ginebra San Miguel made me chuckle since both teams were owned by SMC. Reading more about the 180-year history of Ginebra San Miguel startled me a bit--I just learned that this is the world's largest selling brand, with sales of 23.8 million 9-liter cases in 2012. According to figures from Drinks International, this is even more than the combined sales volumes of the next five top-selling gins, Gordon's, Bombay, Seagram's, Beefeater and Tanqueray in the same year. I was flabbergasted! Upon closer scrutiny, this was understandably so, since Filipinos are among the world's top alcohol drinkers.
