The ramen frenzy has taken over Manila by storm. Everyone seems to be an expert these days, and I sometimes find my friends comparing the dishes of competing stores. Monique and I were at the SM Manila Mall last week, and we spent a whole hour lining up for concert tickets. That made us both a tad grumpy, so we agreed that a hearty lunch was in order. It was lucky that she saw a sign advertising Ramen Cool, and we had no difficulty finding the restaurant. Interiors were bright and tastefully done, relaxing but not too cozy (that customers stay on for hours, thereby preventing turnover).
The food was simple but quite satisfying. We had salmon sashimi, some sushi and gyoza for starters. I particularly liked how the gyoza was meaty and really stuffed well. I had a shoji based pork ramen bowl, while Monique had a seafood special, which to me was a cross between sukiyaki and ramen (the broth was sweet, and the soup was presented in a sukiyaki cooking pot). The noodles weren't bad, but you could tell from the plain soft-boiled egg (not the marinated kind) that the meal wasn't racked at the high end of the totem pole. We spent something like P450 per person.
