From the outside, Cafe Shibuya looked like one of those imported franchises that have sprouted around the metro. Monique and I spent one Sunday morning driving around Quezon City, and we decided to have an early lunch in the UP Town Center. It's interesting how we choose the restaurants we eat in when it's just the two of us together--we choose the restaurants that we think wouldn't be attractive to Vicky, and we reserve the ones that we think Vicky would like to eat in for such a time that Vicky would be around. We also choose restaurants that have menus unfavorable for Andie's preferences--dry foods, chewy meats and the like. In effect, we are more adventurous foodies when it's just the two of us, some sort of father-daughter bonding, I would guess.
I was glad to be told that the coffee shop was completely homegrown. I liked the sense of style that the owners imparted; it was homey, cozy, and the warmth felt much like a good student cafeteria you find abroad. It's a good place to catch up with a close friend, or spend leisurely book reading by yourself.
The place specializes in all kinds of savory and sweet toasts. While the bread comes really thick, the fluffiness is still there. This was evident in their Shibuya Benedict, a Japanese twist to the old French favourite. We also had a cream-based spaghetti dish with shitake mushrooms and prosciutto slices; this was quite tasty but as with most cream dishes, one can only take so much before feeling full. Overall, prepare something like P400 per head, specially if you would like to have a chocolate or coffee drink with your meal.
