Fisher Mall was erected on the Quezon Avenue-Roosevelt site previously occupied by Pantranco (Pangasinan Transit Company) in the seventies. The bus company ran into financial difficulties, and gave up on its property. The mall is sized just right for the neighboring market; not too small to be ignored, yet not too big to be continuously vacant. We rested our tired feet by having merienda at Teppanyaki Express, which was opened just a few months ago.
We wanted to have a light snack, but Monique just couldn't resist and made a beeline for the spicy tuna sushi, which was freshly done and had just the right amount of zing to it. We ordered some gyoza, which fared well in comparison with that of other shops; it was juicy inside while retaining the crisp outer wrapper. The waiter suggested the veggie pancake, which we tried since it was supposed to be one of the house specialties; this, however, was a bit on the bland side for me.
The interiors of the place are pretty elegant, and seating is arranged so that everyone can be served from the three or four teppanyaki grill stations. The samurai helmets and katanas adorning the walls create sufficient ambiance, and despite the fast food connotations of the word "express" as used in retail branding, the restaurant feels authentic enough. We spent some P300 per person for our merienda, and I would estimate that with P600 per head, you can have a decent teppan meal (the chefs have some fancy moves).
