Puerto Azul

It was sometime in the late seventies that Kong raved about the Gary Player designed golf course at Puerto Azul.  Beautiful seascapes, rolling terrain, breezy and fun to play.  He did try to get me more involved in the game, but somehow I never managed to perfect my swing.  With his golf mates Ninong Phil, Uncle Charles and Uncle Toots, they spent many a Sunday morning on the course, which meant him leaving the house at 3am for the easy drive to Ternate.  I recall that he even felt groggy driving on one particular trip and only the noise of the tires hitting the roadside gravel jolted him awake; it was a good thing that nothing untoward happened.

Every now and then, my sisters and I used to drive there by mid-morning to catch their golf gang at the lunch buffet counters at the clubhouse.  I was a new driver then and those trips were one of my earliest out-of-town drives.  We didn't have Waze or Google Maps, and I often had to stop to ask for directions.

For some years, the course fell into disrepair, and had lost its glamor.  I understand that after a long hibernation, the golf course has been revived by some prominent businessmen.  My golfer friends say that a few interesting changes to the layout have been made and that the course is pleasant to play once more.

My recent visit to the area brought in a flood of memories.  I miss my dad already.

The Replacement Killers

* picture from wikipedia

I had so much fun watching The Replacement Killers last night.  This Chow Yun Fat movie is one of the first HK-styled movies released in Hollywood, and the gracefulness of the gun fights gave me a kick all over again.  It's gory, of course, but still, the moves are a delight to watch!

Rika Usami

I opened my YouTube feed this morning, and it just so happened that the 2012 World Karate tournament came online.  I am not much of a kumite fan, but I do like watching kata performances.  Like wushu, gymnastics, synchronized swimming and ballet, kata is a visual treat.  I've never seen such beautifully executed kata before, and I searched who the mystery champion was--none other than the graceful Rika Usami, considered the Queen of Kata!  Take a look at her wonderful routine at the link above, and you will see what I mean.  This clip has reportedly been viewed 17 million times (why have I only seen it now?) and the standing ovation from the 12,000 strong audience was reportedly 5 minutes long!

Lou Rawls

His distinctive voice lives on in so many of my LSS moments.  That stands for Last Song Syndrome in which the last song you hear plays on and on in your head.  Songs like I'll See You When I Get There, Lady Love, You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine, and the enchanting Pure Imagination brings back a lot of good memories.  Karaoke moments even (of course, we never came close to replicating his sound, but it was worthwhile to try reaching that bar).  I was listening to my YouTube playlist this morning and found one of his early recordings, that of God Bless the Child by Billie Holiday.  Oh my...love it so much!  It's my LSS for today...

Vincenzo's Plate

It's one YouTube food channel that I enjoy watching over and over again.  Vincenzo Prosperi of  Vincenzo's Plate makes several oh-so-yummy Italian recipes and gives constructive critique on internet instruction videos made by fellow cooks and even professional chefs.  It seems like during this pandemic, I must have viewed his channel around fifty times already.  He comes from a long family tradition of cooks (he is not a professional chef), and this background probably gives his cooking assessments uncanny pin-point precision. Take a look at his channel and get a light-hearted buzz out of the many ideas and cooking methods he preaches!

DC's Legends of Tomorrow

DC's Legends of Tomorrow is the TV Show I turn to when I am in the mood for a light and breezy time.  The series started off with a heavy "save the world" premise against a major DC villain (Vandal Savage), but the later seasons have a carefree blend of aliens, magic, time travel and sci-fi elements.  To some, it may seem like a hodge-podge mess, but I think it's fun and easy to follow.  I read that Season 7 is coming up this month; can't wait to check it out.
